Labour department responds to accusations of failing to be an impartial arbiter

The Administration of the Ministry of Social Protection (Department of Labour) wishes to respond to an article which appeared in the Guyana Chronicle of February 15, 2019 under the caption “UG Unions accuse Labour Ministry of failing to be an impartial arbiter”.

The article in question referenced a release which was issued by the unions which regarded a conciliation meeting involving the unions themselves and the administration of the University of Guyana as “a most unfortunate experience” and accused the conciliation machinery of bias.

The administration of the Labour Department has no interest in a tit for tat engagement with any of its social partners but it wishes to submit that it will continue to offer professional guidance to anyone who does not act in conformity with standard industrial relations practices.

In the interim it would serve the unions well for them to research the integrity of their actions instead of making unfounded statements against the Labour Department and its Conciliators.
