Labour Minister meets United Minibus Union

Minister of Labour, Hon. Joseph Hamilton, met with members of the United Minibus Union to discuss transitioning workers from an informal economy to a formal economy.

The meeting was held on Friday with President of the Union, Mr. Eon Andrews, the Union’s General Secretary, Mr. Lennon Willings; Treasurer, Ms. Vanessa O’Donogue, executive members and leaders of the Union.

Chief Labour Officer at the Ministry, Mr. Charles Ogle also attended the meeting.

Minister Hamilton committed to working with the Union to ensure that their concerns are addressed in keeping with the laws of Guyana.

The Union has said that the transition can be grouped into two areas, which will help to change the dynamic that usually hinders specific prospects for workers and make transition to the formal economy more likely. These include the recognising the Union by the Trade Union Recognition and Certification Board and the registration of workers from the Union under the Labour Ministry.
