Late Dr. Martin Boodhoo Hailed as Great Son of Guyana

Describing the late Dr. Martin Boodhoo as “a great son of Guyana, a patriot”, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo urged young people to emulate the example of Guyanese who lived their lives with integrity and honesty.

The Prime Minister made those remarks at a memorial service (Satsang) in remembrance of Dr Martin Boodhoo, which was held on Thursday evening at the Shree Krishna Dharmic Mandir at Hydronie, East Bank Essequibo.

Dr. Boodhoo, a former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana and Head of the Privatisation Unit, died on December 25, 2017 in Manchester, England.

In an emotional tribute, the Prime Minister recounted his association and friendship with Dr. Boodhoo for over 50 years. In 1966, he served with him on Guyana’s first National Union of Students, and later on the Council of the University of Guyana. “He was my friend, my brother and colleague who supported me 100% on decisions that I have taken in my political life,” the Prime Minister disclosed.

Professor Nalini Boodhoo and her brother Harry, an attorney, came to Guyana for the memorial service. Professor Boodhoo explained that her Dad was an international consultant in economic development and management to public, private and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). He is a former Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, United Nations Advisor, a lecturer, housing officer, industrial and social welfare officer and sick nurse and dispenser.

Dr. Boodhoo, who was born at Uitvlugt Sugar Estate, West Coast Demerara, had written extensively on Management and Economics of Public Enterprises, Privatisation, Industrialisation, Training and Manpower Development, Migration, Productivity & Entrepreneurship Development and Peace-making and Peace-building.
