Linden Chamber of Industry, Commerce boosting professional development

DPI, GUYANA, Friday, April 6, 2018

The Linden Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Development has established a series of programmes to engender professional business development in the town.

Secretary of the Chamber, Staydon Payne told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that it has been realised that within the region, the management of the finances by the companies is an issue.

“We recognised that mainly within the region access to finance is not the main issue here, it’s more how these companies better manage the finance once they access it. We also recognised that we needed to do more professional development within the private sector so a lot of our programmes are geared towards training, information, knowledge and education.”

Payne went on to relate that some of these programmes include customer care, front desk training and information forums by the various ministries, GO-Invest, and the Centre for Local Business Development.

“We’re very focused on affecting business development within the region and changing the economic situation through knowledge, education and mind change of how people see business and how business should be managed,” Payne mentioned.

According to the secretary, the chamber recently partnered with the New Guyana School to offer training programmes at the Linden Technical Institute for persons interested in business, thereby removing the necessity to travel to the city for these courses.

“We’ve recently built a relationship with the New Guyana School.  We would’ve lobbied and spoken with the tertiary institution here, which is the Linden Technical Institute, where there are going to be now offering their classes locally, rather than persons travelling to Georgetown to take those classes.”

Payne also disclosed due to some stagnation in the economy, the chamber has been able to identify areas within the body itself that need improvement. “So ideally, what we’ve been doing for this first year which will end on October 2018, is engaging, in meetings to have members better understand how they can function within the chamber and what are the benefits of being part of the Linden Chamber of Commerce,” Payne said.

The Linden Chamber of Industry Commerce and Development currently sits on the board of the Small Business Bureau (SBB), Linden Enterprise Network and a number of the regional committees, in order to support, lobby, and assist the private sector businesses in Region 10.
