Linden students skip away with top prize in jump rope contest

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, April 26, 2018

The Mackenzie Sports Club Ground came alive on Tuesday at the Linden Town Week’s (LTW) annual Skip to my Lou Jump Rope Competition. Hundreds of spectators flocked the facility to get a first-hand glimpse of the students’ creative and choreographic skills and dance moves while multitasked with a rope in their hands. The audience was not disappointed and screamed in support of the energy and creativeness displayed. It was truly an exciting and electrifying contest.

Several primary and secondary schools from across Guyana competed and the panel of judges was put to the task to adjudge the best skippers for each category. Groups included the Individual Freestyle, Pair Freestyle, Last Man Standing and the Double Dutch Freestyle. The Mackenzie High School and New Silver City Secondary took away several of the prizes.

At the primary level, Christianburg Primary School won the Double Dutch Freestyle segment followed by Regma Primary and Mackenzie Primary in 2nd and 3rd position. Regma also copped first place in the Paired Freestyle segment followed by Christianburg Primary and Royal Halls School of Learning.  In the Secondary School category, Mackenzie High School carried away the winning prize allowing Linden Foundation Secondary and New Silvercity Secondary to follow second and third respectively.  Mackenzie High Schools also skipped away with the first prize of the Double Dutch segment.

The undefeated Orin Fraser of New Silver City Secondary again was adjudged the Last Man Standing with a new personal best of 21.47 minutes.

For the first time, an Invitational Fusion Competition was added to the programme and saw schools from Regions Two, Four and Six participating. New Amsterdam skipped back to the ancient county with first place with 126 points followed by Wakapoa Secondary with 99 points.

Winners were awarded with trophies, medals, bikes, cellular phones, Bluetooth speakers, smartwatches, hampers, water bottles and haversacks.

This is the fifth year since the Skip to my Lou Jump Rope competition made its debut entrance into the LTW calendar of activities. Following the first year, it garnered attention and became one of the most sought-after sports activity by the youths in Linden. Trainer Lindley Langhorne has been instrumental in teaching scores of students from across Linden to perfect their skills in jump rope. Students from Linden also participated in an international jump rope competition in the United States last year.

The Jump Rope contest is viewed as a way to keep students meaningfully occupied in extracurricular activities that will also boost their physical and mental capacity. This, in turn, will have a ripple effect on their academic and social pursuits. Skip to My Loy sessions are held at the Mackenzie High School auditorium weekly.
