Lindeners urged to utilise facilities at Wismar Hospital – Min. Harmon
– govt on a series of countrywide outreaches to ascertain the conditions under which people live and get a view on matters which affect them
– ensuring citizens benefiting from the good life promised

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon has called on the residents of Linden, especially in the Blueberry Hill area, Upper Demerara-Berbice, Region 10 to utilise the services of the upgraded Wismar Hospital.
During a walkabout exercise today, in Blueberry Hill, Minister Harmon and a team including Regional Member of Parliament (MP), Jermaine Figueira, visited the hospital to observe the operation of the health facility.
Nurse Joseph (only name given), a senior nurse at the hospital explained that a significant amount of money was expended to rehabilitate a new maternity wing at the hospital, however, some residents often opt to travel to Mackenzie to use the main referral hospital.
“We have an emergency area, a nursery, labour room, delivery room and everything, furnished with all equipment and qualified nurses, so we are advising patients, especially maternity patients that we are quite capable of attending to their needs.”
Minister Harmon noted that the health facility was rehabilitated at great expense to the state.
“Therefore, we wish that they [the residents] utilise this facility… Right here, which is nearby and can deliver the kind of first response treatment you need.”
Minister Harmon pointed out that unlike other areas, where there are not enough health facilities to cater to the number of persons in need of the service, this is not the situation at the Wismar Hospital where all the services are available.
The hospital has been serving the people of Wismar for several years and, according to MP Figueira, significant work has been done to improve the facility’s standards. “This is one of the best hospitals we have, it is very clean, and we have professional staff who are always eager to serve the people,” he emphasised.
Today’s outreach in Linden also included Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan, Minister within the Ministry of Finance, Jaipaul Sharma, Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally, Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Keith Scott, Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry, Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes, Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson and Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Valerie Garrido-Lowe.
Minister Harmon explained that the outreach aims to ascertain the conditions under which people live and get a view on matters which affect them. He said that the government has a duty and responsibility to ensure that all Guyanese benefit from the good life they promised before assuming office in 2015.
