Local entertainers called on to join the fight against COVID-19
– “If each of us wants to stay safe, then it is important to ensure everyone is doing the right thing.” – Minister Anthony
During a meeting hosted by the Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony and Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Kwame McCoy, local entertainers were briefed on their involvement in conveying messages to Guyanese to assist in the fight against the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The discussion was held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) and saw several radio personalities, local entertainers and Deejays (DJs) in attendance.
Minister McCoy relayed the importance of Guyanese entertainers in delivering COVID-19 related health protocol messages.
“We would like to utilise the skills, expertise and influence that reside in all entertainers here today, to address your fan base, constituents and families to work in a coordinated and uniformed manner to follow health guidelines to limit the spread of COVID-19,” Minister McCoy explained.
Minister Anthony echoed similar statements, stressing the important role local entertainers have in attracting all Guyanese to adhere to health procedures in the fight against the novel coronavirus.
“If each of us wants to stay safe, then it is important to ensure everyone is doing the right thing because if some of us are disobeying health protocols, the infection will continue to spread in our country. So, our appeal to you [local entertainers], is to extend the Government’s reach to different people and audiences in getting the messages across,” the Health Minister stated.
Local entertainer, Kerwin Bollers, who has been in the industry for over twenty years, encouraged his fan base and all Guyanese to obey to all health protocols.
“I believe that we will be an asset in getting the message out in the fight against COVID-19 because COVID-19 is everyone’s business. We all have families and friends, and we all want things to get back to normal,” Bollers said.
Another entertainer, and founder of the local entertainment agency – Team MMR, WR Reaz, noted the importance of the Government recognising the role of local entertainers in conveying messages to Guyanese in the fight against COVID-19.
“We ought to adhere to the rules. Life teaches about rules, and we ought to live by them, and the important thing is you ought to start wearing a face mask publicly. I want to encourage fellow Guyanese and fans of Team MMR to utilise a mask. It doesn’t cost us anything, and it saves our lives and others as well,” WR Reaz posited.
The meeting was an open discussion where the entertainers offered proposals and ideas to the PPP/C Government in moving forward.
