Mashramani 2020 kicks off

Celebrating 50 years as a republican nation

– Twenty-six bands to compete for the crown

DPI, Guyana, Sunday, February 23, 2020

Despite early morning rain showers bands made their final preparations and revellers assembled at the first judging point on Camp Road and Thomas Lands, for the much-anticipated Mashramani Costume and Float Parade.

This year’s event is being celebrated under the theme “Reflect, Celebrate, Transform”.

As the eye-catching floats and colourful, exuberant revellers are making their way along the route, spectators and vendors are already lining the roadside to get a good view of the parade.

With twenty-six bands participating DPI spoke to some of the designers and revellers before about their expectations for the procession.

Designer for the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Jermaine Broomes, noted that 50 years as a republican nation speaks volume.

“Guyana Together – Celebrate, [Reflect], Transform, we are transforming and when you look at our floats, it is depicted there from the coast to the hinterlands. So, you understand our plan is all about celebration after hard work,” Broomes said.

Toshona Griffith, making her debut as one GWI’s revellers, expects Mash 2020 to be a marvellous experience.  “For our country, on the whole, it means a lot to us because it brings everyone together no matter your race,” she told DPI.

Gordon Allicock, a representative of Region 6 Berbice’s band, expects to defend the medium band title.  Allicock eagerly stated, “We have been celebrating, transforming and reflecting for the 50th.”

The parade will navigate through the Mash Route – commencing at Camp Street/Carifesta Avenue through Vlissengen Road and concluding at D’Urban Park for the final display of the floats and costumes.
