Matarkai Sub-Region NDC introduces measures to tackle COVID-19

The Matarkai Sub Region Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) in Region One, has introduced several temporary measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in the area.

A statement issued by the Council on April 2, 2020, noted clearly that the new rules will take effect from Monday, April 6, 2020, until further notice.

All residents are allowed to be on the streets until 6pm. To ensure social distancing is maintained residents have been advised that funerals and wedding ceremonies should have no more than 10 persons in attendance.

The release instructs all businesses including grocery stores, roadside vending, bars and restaurants with the except for pharmacies to be closed 6pm.

Restaurants and other food shops are permitted to provide only take away services.

The NDC said businesses have been given 24 hours to install handwashing facilities at the entrance of their buildings; citing that it will temporarily seize all the business permits of proprietors who fail to comply with these instructions.

Further, a 6am to 6pm curfew was provided to motorboat operators plying their trade to Port Kaituma.

Should there be any ‘backtrack’ activities in the area, residents are asked to report same.

The Matarkai NDC is calling on all citizens to give their fullest cooperation to avoid the spread of COVID-19 and to make social distancing their chief priority.
