M&CC Stabroek clean-up exercise

−MOPI commits to establishing a roadway leading to Stabroek waterfront

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, July 16, 2019

Following the recent cleanup of the Stabroek Bazaar and waterfront area, the Department of Public Information (DPI) sat down with the Director of the Solid Waste Management Committee of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), Walter Narine to discuss the way forward.

“We (M&CC) would have removed 17 skip bins and each skip bins weighed about 4.5 tonnes when it was filled. There was a lot of garbage, so when we undertook to clean up the Bazaar and waterfront, we were cognisant that the exercise would not stop there.”

Narine disclosed that this coming weekend the M&CC engineers will be cleaning the drains in the area.

According to the Director, this exercise has allowed for more developmental works to take place within Stabroek market area. “The Ministry of Public Infrastructure has given a commitment to his Worship the Mayor to pave the entire road leading back into the fishpond.”

The Solid Waste Director has called on vendors and business owners to desist from the practice of paying vagrants to dispose of their garbage in the area. He said steps are also being put in place to ensure there is an end to the careless disposal of refuse.

“The solution is that we have established a Public Health and Market Committee and the group has developed a policy for vending. This policy will require that each vendor has a receptacle. This container can be provided by Council at a cost or they can source a suitable receptacle themselves which will be collected by the M&CC when it is time to empty the bins. This should come on stream shortly,” Narine explained.

He emphasised both vendors and businesspersons must be more responsible when it comes to the discarding of their garbage. The recent improvements in the Stabroek area have been welcomed by the vendors plying their trade in the area.

Debra Sam, a vendor of 20 years said, “this place has not been like this for a long time, the market has been improving a lot since the government changed.” Sam observed that the recent upgrades demonstrate that the M&CC is working to ensure the environment the vendors work in is a healthy one.

This cleanup exercise was spearheaded by Georgetown Mayor Ubraj Narine and his team.
