Medical team to establish base in Moraikobai

– to reduce Covid spike, transmission

Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony says the COVID-19 medical team heading to Moraikobai, Mahaica-Berbice (Region Five), is gearing up to establish a more permanent presence there.  

As is now customary, when there is a report of a spike, the quick response team would establish a base in the affected area to conduct several activities, including supporting treatment, quarantine and contact tracing, until a decrease is observed. The quick response team comprises a medical team, representatives of Operation COVI-CURB and others.

“We have decided with the Regional Health Authorities that we’ll be sending back a team, possibly we’ll have a more permanent presence at least for the next three weeks in Moraikobai. By that way, we will have the capacity to continue doing testing to monitor the circuitry persons who are now in full isolation, and to give whatever other support the community would need,” Dr. Anthony said in Wednesday’s COVID-19 update.

The Minister said the team collaborates closely with community leaders to identify needs and craft a plan aimed at reducing Covid transmission.

“The regional authority, the chairman, vice chairman would also be going in so that they can talk more directly with the villages and the village council to get them to understand the importance of this exercise. So, we are happy that we are getting the support of the regional administration that would allow us to really be able to do an effective job.” Region Five currently has a total of 49 active COVID-19 cases. Moraikobai, the only Indigenous community in that Region has recorded 33 active cases.
