Message of Condolence by Hon. Dr. George Norton, M.D., M.P, Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport, on the passing of legendary Calypsonian Winston Bailey “Mighty Shadow”

Honourable Minister, Dr. George Norton, M.D., M.P, Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport extends condolences to the family, friends and entire nation of Trinidad and Tobago on the passing of the late Winston Bailey “Mighty Shadow”; who passed away on Tuesday, 23rd October, 2018.

Bailey was known for entertaining the masses in Trinidad and Tobago as well as their counterparts throughout the Caribbean with his unique entertainment style and ‘lyrical hits’ which spanned his more than 40-year career; he earned the title of being one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most original calypsonians.

Bailey won Road March Titles in 1974 with “Bass­man” and 2001 with “Stranger” and the Ca­lyp­so Monarch title in 2000 with “What’s Wrong with Me” and “Scratch Meh Back.” He also won the In­ter­na­tion­al So­ca Monarch title with “Stranger” in 2001. In 2003, Bailey was awarded the Hum­ming­bird Medal (Sil­ver) for his contribution to culture. Winston Bailey was a legend and his legacy will continue to live through his music.

Honourable Minister, Dr. George Norton, on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana, extends heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and the entire nation of Trinidad and Tobago on the death of the late Winston Bailey.
