Mexico-Guyana diplomatic ties continue to strengthen

As Mexico observes its 208th anniversary of independence, relations with Guyana has never been stronger.

At a reception this evening, President David Granger conveyed congratulations to the President and people of Mexico as they celebrate their 208th independence anniversary.

“Mexico can be proud of its achievements over the past 208 years,” the Head of State said.

President Granger noted that “Mexico and Guyana have enjoyed excellent relations since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties on March 1, 1973.” According to the Guyanese leader, over the years, the two countries have “fostered active cooperation in the fields of agriculture, disaster management, education, oil and gas, trade and other areas.”

He remarked that Mexico has provided a valuable market for Guyana’s paddy as well as helped to resuscitate the coconut industry. He added that Mexico began working towards cooperation in the petroleum sector.

In his remarks Mexican Ambassador, Ivan Roberto Sierra Medel expressed his gratitude to the Government of Guyana for their “continuous support and friendship” towards Mexico.

The Mexican Ambassador stated trade relations with Guyana have strengthened over the last year as Mexico became one of the largest importers of “high-quality paddy” from Guyana with them buying more than two hundred thousand tons within the last twelve months.

Ambassador Medel also acknowledged Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo who was “the pioneer on bringing together Guyanese exporters and Mexican importers for the commercialisation of grain.”

He also highlighted that over the last two years the Mexican Embassy has partnered with the Ministry of Education, the University of Guyana and the Ministry of Culture to enhance capacity building of Guyana’s citizens. The Ambassador noted that ten Guyanese have been the beneficiaries of bursaries to pursue Masters’ Degrees in the areas of Agriculture, Natural Resources Management and Engineering.
