Min. Garrido-Lowe celebrates ‘Republic 49’ with Moruca

Residents of Moruca, Region 1, Barima-Waini ensured they were part of the grand celebration of Guyana’s 49th Republic Anniversary last Saturday.
Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Valerie Garrido-Lowe joined the residents of Santa Rosa – a community of Moruca, for the flag raising ceremony on the eve of February 23 and the celebration on Saturday.
There, she reminded the residents that the national occasion is to be celebrated by all Guyanese.
“Our forefathers have laid the foundation of self-sufficiency and self-government, officially departing from imperialism and thereby paving the way for us all to determine where we go as a nation in the best interest of our children and future generation,” the minister said.
She said Guyana, becoming a Republic back in 1970, has evolved into a “proud nation; one which joins other developing countries around the globe in framing development models unique to its culture and heritage.
“Republican status has given us the space to practice what was already injected into us by our forefathers- togetherness and unity toward our own ideals.”
She said Guyanese are being carried on the backs of legacies left for all.
According to Minister Garrido-Lowe, with the economic and social transformation from the coming oil and gas sector, Guyanese must all embrace cooperation and unity. This, she said, can be demonstrated through a commitment to the work of the administration.
