― Region 5 outreach in Fort Wellington a success

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, April 25, 2019

Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, began his meeting in Calcutta on Thursday, with a walk along the Calcutta Dam (road) north, to inspect an area between Calcutta and Good Faith canal where residents have requested that a bridge be constructed.

The bridge, they say, will make it much easier to conduct their daily businesses; transporting farming produce, easier movement of cattle and other livestock, clearer and quicker access to the sea for fishermen.

Among the first issues raised, was the much-needed rehabilitation of the Burma road. “Government will repair the road, I promise you that, for whatever reason, it was not done, but I assure you if a commitment was given it will be done,” Minister Trotman assured.

Other matters raised include; the need for landline telephones in the area, electricity at the Augsburg Primary School, proper fencing at the Calcutta Nursery and Primary Schools, the need to raise the Abary Road which comes under water during the rainy season and upgrades to the CATRECALAB recreational ground.

On a more personal note, residents came with various issues relating to house lots and land disputes and issues with the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).

Regarding the recreational ground, Councillor Gloria Lindore-Wolfe said money has already been allocated for this, and they were awaiting word from the contractor.

In the meantime, Minister Trotman also assured residents that President Granger remains strong and in control of his government.

“Your President is back and has completed his medical treatment” he stated.

This statement was welcomed with loud applause from the Calcutta residents.

Following the meeting, Minister Trotman handed out garden plants to residents and sporting equipment to the local sporting committee. Apart from pledging to address matters raised by the residents, he also promised to assist the community with clearing the drains as the rainy season was impending.
