Min. Walrond to be sworn in at National Assembly’s next sitting

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Hon. Oneidge Walrondwill be sworn in at the next sitting of the National Assembly as an unelected member.

A press release issued by the Attorney General’s Chambers said this decision was taken following a High Court hearing on Thursday which challenged the legality of Minister Walrond’s sitting in the National Assembly.

The case was brought by the APNU+AFC Chief Whip, Mr. Christopher Jones and heard before Chief Justice (Ag), Roxane George in the High Court.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall; Deborah Kumar, Deputy Solicitor General, and Chevy Devonish, State Counsel, appeared for Minister Walrond.

In keeping with its commitment to uphold the rule of law, the AG Chambers said, the “Government took expeditious remedial action in correcting an error of law that was made as soon was reasonably practicable without the need for protracted, time consuming and unnecessary litigation.”

The press release also stated that “upon inquiry, the Attorney General informed the Court that the legality of all actions and or decisions of Minister Walrond prior to the 1st day of December 2020, would be saved and cured by the De Facto Doctrine and the Doctrine of Necessity – a proposition with which the Court concurred.”

The Government’s decision was based on the need for Minister Walrond to focus on discharging her Ministerial responsibilities to improve the lives of citizens.
