Minister Edghill examines emergency works along Dantzig, Fairfield foreshores

– as spring tides approach

Minister of Public Works, Hon. Bishop Juan Edghill and a team, Saturday afternoon, visited the Dantzig and Fairfield, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara foreshores to inspect emergency sea defence works aimed at lessening the impact of the next spring tide.

The Minister said he wanted to get a first-hand look at the work the contractors have been doing to prevent overtopping, as the spring tide is expected within the next two weeks.  He was accompanied by Region Five Regional Executive Officer, Ms. Genevieve Blackman, BK Chief Engineer, Mr. Ganesh Sawh and employees of the Ministry.

Soon after entering office, the PPP/C awarded a contract for emergency works to be undertaken along two foreshores at Dantzig and one at Fairfield, which often flood during the spring tide.

“This is just not merely checking to see how works are going. With an anticipated high tide in two weeks and with Diwali coming up, which will also have a major high tide, I am here to have a first-hand look.  [To] understand what is taking place when we engage the contractors and to protect this area, ensuring value for money as well,” Minister Edghill said.

The Minister said he was confident the contractors were skilled and appreciated that their work would safeguard lives and livelihoods.
