Minister Parag aims to enhance standard of Public Sector 

— expects highest level of professionalism

Newly-appointed Minister of Public Service, Hon. Sonia Parag, says she will be working to bridge the gap between the public sector and the citizens of Guyana.

The Minister spoke with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on the sidelines of a meeting with the staff of the Public Service College.

According to Minister Parag, the meeting was part of doing an overall analysis of what currently obtains in the various departments of her Ministry.

“It is really to get an understanding of what has been taking place in here for the last five years, more recently, the last year, to determine how we can move [forward] from there,” she explained.

With emphasis on the modernisation of the Public Sector as a priority, Minister Parag noted, it is crucial that citizens are satisfied with the standard of the Public Sector. In her meeting with the staff, the Minister expressed her expectation of the highest level of professionalism.

“What we are looking at is to modernise the Public Service, so we are on par with other regions such as the international community, and to bring that level of professionalism to the Public Service… All the goals and policies that we plan to implement are for the betterment and improvement of the Public Sector.”

It was also highlighted that the Ministry has begun to review all issues regarding scholarships.

 “We’re are currently working on that, to see how we will be able to deal with the immediate issues with scholarships, and we also have to relook the entire scholarship programme as it is,” Minister Parag disclosed.

Currently, the Public Service Training College is revamping its virtual training programmes.

The staff also raised issues such as, the need for more interaction with the public who access the office for various services and more physical workspace.

Minister Parag was sworn in to lead the Ministry of Public Service on August 5, 2020.
