The three-day Ministerial Outreach in Region 9 has gotten off to a great start with a focus on education, health, legal aid, infrastructure and technology.

First on the ground was Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry who commissioned two brand new Nursery Schools in the communities of Tabatinga and Parikwaranau and a smart classroom at the Lethem Learning Resource Centre.

At one of the commissioning ceremonies, Minister Henry noted the coalition’s efforts to continue bridging the education gaps between the hinterland and the coastland.

“As a Government, we are interested in the development of all of our people and therefore we will continue to upgrade facilities, build new facilities and modernize education in each and every region in this country.”

Meanwhile, Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams SC., has assured the residents of Lethem that Legal Aid services will soon be made available to them. He gave this assurance during a tour of the Lethem Magistrate’s Court where he met with Principal Magistrate, Allan Wilson and staff members of the court.

“We are bringing legal aid to the hinterland… People need access to justice. Many people come into the court that need legal aid. An IDB funded initiative to reduce the prison population will facilitate this,” the AG said.

With a focus on addressing the region’s health, Minister within Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings met with the residents of Moco Moco village in the South Rupununi and promised the development begun under this government will continue. She reminded that the administration is working to ensure all Guyanese have equitable access to every national resource.

“We need the people of this region to have good roads, good water, better access to health care and of course better income,” Minister Cummings said.

She noted some of the project slated for the region including the construction of the Regional Administration Annex, the rehabilitation of the living quarters at St. Ignatius among others.

She also took time out to present a wheelchair to a Solomon Lyte of Moco Moco, who lost leg several years ago while working on the Moco Moco Primary School. Lyte was most appreciative of the donation which he said has brought him great relief.

Later in the evening, Public Infrastructure Minister, David Patterson disclosed that money has already earmarked to transform Lethem into the next major transport hub in the country.

He was joined by joined Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge and Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry for a public meeting with residents of Lethem.

The ministers all committed to working with the villages to bring development.

The three-day ministerial outreach will see 19 ministers fanning out to communities across the region to address issues impeding their development. The delegation is expected to visit the communities of Achiwib, Aishalton, Kwatamang and Rupertee.
