Ministry has set date for GTU meeting

The Ministry of Education (MoE) notes an article carried in the Wednesday 13th January 2021 edition of the Stabroek News (SN) under the headline “GTU to share ideas with the ministry on keeping NGSA students safe.”

The Ministry of Education registers its dismay at the blatant inaccuracy contained in that article whose content is attributed to Ms. Correta McDonald, the Guyana Teachers’ Union’s General Secretary where she is reported to have said the Ministry has not indicated a date for a meeting with the Union.

On Tuesday, January 5, 2021, the second day of the school term, the Ministry invited the Union to its usual fixed date meeting which is held on the first Thursday of each month which would have been on January 7, 2021. The Ministry of Education indicated that on the agenda would be a discussion about NGSA 2021.

On Wednesday January 6, 2021, the GTU asked that there be a postponement to the following Thursday which would be tomorrow January 14, 2021. The Ministry was told that the union needed the time it asked for to put together its view on that particular issue, which is NGSA 2021.  It is therefore not true that the MoE has not indicated a date for the meeting as was indicated by Ms. Mc Donald. The meeting is set for 14:00h tomorrow complete with zoom login details.
