Ministry of Public Health collaborates with Brazilian volunteer group on outreaches

ā€“ Upper Takatu-Upper Essequibo (Region 9) residents to receive Obstetrics, Cardiology, Dentistry, and Paediatric services

The Public Health Sector in Region Nine, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo is expected to benefit from at least four specialised medical outreaches in 2019.

Representatives from the Manaus Adventist Volunteer Service, Brazil with Representatives from the Guyana team after their meeting in Boa Vista, Brazil.

This is being made possible after the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) pledged its commitment to facilitating a volunteer group from Manaus, Brazil to conduct these exercises.

Manaus Adventist Volunteer Service, a Christian volunteer medical team out of Manaus, Brazil has outlined that they will be conducting four outreaches to Region Nine with the first volunteer group scheduled for March 1 to 5, 2019.

They will be offering services in the areas of Obstetrics, Cardiology, Dentistry, and Paediatrics in three phases. The first phase will focus on screening and diagnosis, the second on surgeries and other complex medical procedures and the last phase is reserved for follow up, monitoring and evaluation.

A delegation of senior personnel, representing the Ministry of Public Health and the Region Nine administration, met with the volunteer service group on Saturday, October 13 in the Guyana Consulate in Boa Vista, Brazil, to plan the various aspects of these outreaches.

The Guyanese delegation included Advisor to the Minister of Public Health, John Adams, MP, Clinical and Regional Programmes Advisor to the Minister of Public Health, Caroline Hicks, Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Oā€™Neil Atkins, Public Health Ministryā€™s International Desk Coordinator, Denroy Tudor and Regional Executive Officer Region Nine, Kerwin Wade.

Shirley G. Melville, Guyanaā€™s Consul General to Brazil remarked that this engagement was vital to ensure the success of the projected outreach. Coordinator of the International Desk, MOPH indicated that these projected outreaches signify the Ministry of Public Healthā€™s commitment to ensuring that access to primary healthcare is achieved throughout Guyana.

This is part of a fruitful bilateral relationship between Guyana and Brazil where the two countries collaborated for the improvement of sectors including Public Health, Defense and Infrastructure.
