As the first local Children and Family Centre at Plum Park nears completion, the allocation of $30M was today passed by National Assembly for the installation of a fire escape. The facility is intended to provide temporary housing persons in transition.

The soon-to-be-commissioned Children and Family Centre is equipped with family apartments to avoid separation of families and provide care for children as they transition from difficult circumstances.

Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally, today asserted the government’s commitment to providing safe temporary housing facilities for Guyanese faced with difficulties.

“We are ensuring that we take every possible safety measure with this new building and complex.”

In addition to a fire escape, Minister Ally said that the ministry wants to equip the new building with a transformer to ensure that the facility has an adequate supply of electricity.

The centre contains a mess hall, an administration building, a storage department, coaching department and a playground.

Unfortunately, the previous Drop-In centre, located on Hadfield Street, Georgetown was lost to fire.

Aside from approving funds for the completion of the Children and Family Centre at Plum Park, National Assembly also approved over $16M to cover debts incurred by the previous administration, for the provision of security services.

Minister Ally said “we believe, as a government, that people must not suffer.”

Furthermore, an additional $25M was allocated to the purchasing of goods and services under the childcare and protection programme. The funds will go towards the provision of basic amenities for the most vulnerable Guyanese people.
