Minister Lawrence referred to these employees (Doctors, Nurses, Nursing Assistants, PCAs, Laboratory Staff, Ancillary & Security) as the frontline staff keeping the nation safe from a full-blown disease outbreak.

“Our Health workers are our first line of defence and without them, you will agree, our defence line becomes non-existent and all our efforts at combating this infectious disease will be futile,” the minister stated.

Describing the stigmatization of health workers by some (refusal of entry to public transportation among others) as “irresponsible and weakening” the country’s key line of response to COVID-19” the Health Minister called for an immediate end to the practice.

The minister compounded her call to the Guyanese public to band together and fight the war against the coronavirus by giving overwhelming support to the healthcare workforce.

She encouraged staff to feel free to engage the MoPH and other key managers of the health system in Guyana to make recommendations in moving forward as they continue to do their part.

“If you have recommendations concerning any aspects we may have overlooked, pen those to the RHOs in your region; for staff at GPHC, you can submit to Brig’ Ret’d George Lewis, CEO of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and for those of you in the Private Institutions, you can submit your recommendations to the CEOs of your institution. Concerning doctors in private clinics, your recommendation can be shared through the Medical Council.”
