French Alliance of Guyana hosts second Fête de la musique

DPI, GUYANA, Saturday, June 23, 2018

The French Alliance of Guyana (Alliance Française du Guyana) hosted its second Fête de la Musique in the Promenade Gardens today.

The celebration of music was held in collaboration the Consulate of France in Georgetown and the Ambassador of France to Guyana and Suriname.

President of the French Alliance, Dhamatie Goring noted the event was also in observation of World Music Day which was observed on June 21. “The idea is for the music to be played for all of us to enjoy, to appreciate the music and to lift our spirits,” Goring said.

Local artistes across genres serenaded the diplomatic corps and Guyanese with song, instrumental and steel pan music. There was even spoken word poetry and dance.

World Music Day which is also known as Fête de la Musique is observed in more than 100 countries across the globe. Originating in France, the event celebrates the appointment of a French composer, Maurice Fleuret as the Director of Music and Dance back in October 1981. Artistes were given the opportunity to express themselves through music in the streets.  The first World Music Day was observed in 1982.
