MV Canawaima still engaging the attention of authorities

─ the vessel experienced technical difficulties a few weeks ago and could not travel on its own speed

─ a decision was taken to have the vessel assessed and repaired

─ operations suspended until further notice

The matter of the Guyana/Suriname ferry is still engaging the attention of the authorities. This was revealed by Director-General (DG) of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon.

The DG was at the time responding to questions posed during the weekly post-Cabinet briefing. A few weeks ago, the MV Canawaima experienced technical difficulties and as a result, could not travel on its own speed.

“There is a proposal to have it towed by a pontoon across the river and there is a counterproposal from Guyana for us to put one of our vessels on the route… so these are the discussions that are going on between the Suriname Government and our Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” DG Harmon disclosed.

In May 2019, the Management of the Guyana/Suriname Ferry Service announced that operations will be suspended until further notice. Terminal Manager, Gale Culley-Greene, who spoke exclusively with the Department of Public Information (DPI), explained that the Canawaima Ferry has been experiencing mechanical difficulties for some time and a decision was taken to have the vessel assessed and repaired.
