– started operations with 45 workers in 1969

DPI, Guyana, Friday, May 17, 2019

For its 50 years in service, the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO) celebrated in grand style, with three hundred guests, at the Marriot Hotel Thursday evening.

Over the years, Guyana’s largest flour company has worked to transform the country’s capability to produce and supply flour rather than to import. NAMILCO was founded on May 17, 1969 with 45 workers and at that time produced 3,300 hundred-pound sacks of flour daily.

The company now has 136 employees and churns out 240 metric tons of wheat per day. It exports to Brazil, Canada, Antigua, Barbados and other destinations.

The company has diversified over the years, now producing Thunderbolt All Purpose Flour, Maid Marian Self-Rising Flour and Maid Marian Pholourie Quick Mix.

Speaking to Info Hub, recently appointed Minister of Business Haimraj Rajkumar said that the company has come a far way.

“Namilco has led a path that others will take example from to put Guyana on the map in business and quality produce. Fifty years come with hard work, dedication, intervention and leadership. Namilco has fed our people and those in the Diaspora,” Minister Rajkumar said.

Among the officials at the event were Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder, Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson and Mayor of Georgetown Ubraj Narine.
