National Gender and Social Inclusion Policy to be implemented this year- Minister Ally

DPI, Guyana, Friday, March 9, 2018

The Ministry of Social Protection has developed a National Gender and Social Inclusion Policy which will be implemented, by the end of this year. The national policy aims to mainstream gender issues into all sectors, thereby eliminating all negative economic, social and cultural practices that impede equality and equity.

Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally.

Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally speaking at International Women’s Day programmes at the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) and at Parc Rayne, Rahaman’s Park yesterday, explained that the policy is intended to strengthen links between the government, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) and the private sector.

Fostering such closer collaboration, the Minister noted will aid in the mainstreaming of ‘gendering’ in the respective sectors. It also facilitates the development, maintenance and provision of gender-sensitive information and disaggregated data for use in planning and project implementation at all levels across all sectors.

She explained, “The agenda represents a comprehensive and transformative framework that clearly links the gender equality and empowerment of rural women and girls to other goals and targets, inter alia, ending poverty in all its forms.”

Minister Ally said the need for a cross-cutting, inclusive and gender-sensitive approach is clear, noting that without this transformation, the goals envisaged by Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) Number Five would not achieved. She noted that the administration sees gender as an inclusionary issue, hence the need to formulate a policy.
