National recount to see earlier completion

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, June 4, 2020

With just 243 ballot boxes to go, the national vote recount of the March 2, 2020, General and Regional Elections is likely to be completed a week ahead of schedule.

The current process at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre now focuses on the largest electoral district, Region Four, as the Regions Six and Ten, that had one box each, were completed this morning.

The twelve workstations are currently recounting the Region Four ballots.

With an average of 80 boxes per day, there is a projection that the physical recounting of the ballots could be completed by the Monday, June 8.

GECOM had extended the recount timeline to June 13, with plans for a declaration of the results three days later. The declarations will be made after the commission examines the and deliberates on the full report by the Chief Elections Officer (CEO).

Today’s process saw 83 ballot boxes recounted, including 81 from Region Four, one from Region Six and one from Region Ten. So far, a total 2,096 were reviewed.

Some 2,063 Statements of Recount (SOR) were also tabulated for the General elections and 2,068 were tabulated for the Regional polls.
