National Valuation exercise to further develop communities-MP Adams

Government Member of Parliament (MP) John Adams, today, shut down statements made in the House by the Opposition, that the National valuation exercise will be a burden to the citizens of Guyana.

Adams on day two of the National Budget debates said that the exercise seeks to garner more revenue for the Municipalities and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC.)

The MP stated that some persons are cheating the system by exploiting loopholes that currently exist. These gaps have allowed persons to pay today, the same sum of rates and taxes they paid in the 1980s, while others completely avoid paying, at all.

It was also pointed out by Adams that several new housing schemes constructed over the last few years were never handed over to the NDCs, as such tax revenues are not being collected from these property or home owners.

He explained that “councils are often being bombarded by some of the very home owners, who do not contribute a dime to their revenue collection, for developmental works to be done in their areas.”

“Let’s be fair, their properties must be valued, so they must pay their share of rates and taxes to the towns and neighbourhood councils,” he emphasised.

Adams noting that national evaluation is not new to Guyana, added that it is simply another method of bridging the gap to remove the inequality that currently exists in the various towns and neighbourhoods.

Addressing the theme of the 2018 National Budget, the MP opined it is another roadmap designed by the government to ensure all Guyanese benefit from the projected developments.
