– ‘Celebrating a golden anniversary’

DPI, Guyana, Friday, February 14, 2020

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) has launched its annual Mash Band under the theme “Guyana Rising, The Potential of Eco-Friendly Mining.”

In brief remarks on Friday, MNR’s Administrator, Beverly Alert, said that attaining republican status in 1970 signalled an important period in Guyana’s history.

“Today, 50 years on, you might want to say we have grown and indeed we have. But we are still a very young nation, and at this point in time, 50 years after achieving republican status, our country is set for unprecedented growth.”

Alert also called on Guyanese to celebrate the Golden Jubilee and all of its festivities.

The MNR’s annual Mash Band launch displayed the talents of its staff and students of the Sophia Primary School.

Sophia Primary was represented by Grade 5 Canary students, who sang a national song. Ten-year-old Akeela Nurse shared her appreciation for the holiday.

“To me, Mashramani is celebrating after hard work [and] seeing all the bright colours and seeing people come out,” she said.

Nelsion Nurse, one of Guyana’s top designers and CEO of Nandre’s Kreations, stated that his organisation has many surprises for Mash 2020.

Nurse, who started his company in October 2010, displayed his designs for the natural resources ministry. He stated that the concept falls under promoting sustainable and friendly mining practices.

“We’re hoping to maintain positive energy over the next five days so that we can be ready for Mash Night,” Nurse exclaimed.

Mash Night scheduled for February 20, is the first leg of judging for the Mashramani Costume and Float Parade.

Guyana will be celebrating its 50th republican anniversary under the theme – “Guyana Together: Reflect, Celebrate, Transform.”
