Natural Resources Ministry gets $133M supplementary
– $26.4M for establishment of REDD secretariat
– $8.8M for institutional strengthening of NTC, Indigenous NGOs
– $51.6M for the REDD+ communication and outreach strategy development
– $35.8M to develop REDD+ strategy and options framework

Supplementary funding of $133M was approved by the National Assembly for the Ministry of Natural Resources to offset additional expenses under the Forest Carbon project.
The sum of $26.2M of the total amount granted will be used to facilitate payments to a number of ongoing consultancies to support the establishment of the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) secretariat. This falls under the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) technical assistance.
For capacity building and institutional strengthening for the National Toshaos’ Council (NTC) and Indigenous Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), $8.8M is allocated.
Additionally, $5M will be used for the National Conflict Resolution Strategy, $51.6M for the REDD-plus communication and outreach strategy development and $35.8M to develop a REDD-plus strategy and options framework.
This is as Guyana continues to advance its readiness under the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) Project to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation.
REDD-plus aims to preserve and sustainably manage forests and enhance forest carbon stocks thereby adding value to standing forests; and enabling developing countries like Guyana to access future REDD-plus funding, through performance-based payments.
