NDCs, RDC urged to cooperate

DPI, Guyana, Friday, April 20, 2018

East Berbice-Corentyne, Region Six has recorded numerous developments since the Coalition government took office in 2015. However, according to the Representative of the Office of the Prime Minister in the region, Gobin Harbhajan, this progress is not being highlighted because there is a lack of cooperation at the local level.

Office of the Prime Minister’s Representative of Region Six, East Berbice Corentyne, Gobin Harbhajan.

Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) in Region Six are tasked with responsibility for the management and administration of these areas within its boundaries. Councillors are elected at Local Government Elections (LGE), which is held under the general supervision of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). LGE is scheduled for this year.

Harbhajan made an appeal to NDC councillors in the region to work collaboratively to ensure the government’s vision of the “good life” is realised while promoting the positive development in the respective areas.

“We have a lot of positive developments in the region but also have a lot of peddled wrong information peddled (opposition councillors control most of the region’s NDCs). I am appealing to them, if they can work hand in hand with the region, then we can get these local NDCs more focused on development instead of stifling progress.”

Functions of the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) include the provision of efficient services for the residents, including sanitation, garbage disposal, road/dam maintenance, market facilities, burial grounds, abattoirs, drainage. Also, the maintenance and protection of public property and the levying and collection of rates and taxes.
