New Amsterdam residents laud govt’s investment in township

The Town of New Amsterdam has seen extraordinary transformation over the last few years, and residents are thrilled to share the news.

From major road repairs and expansion to a 24-hour water supply, residents of New Amsterdam are beaming with pride over what they believe is the beginning of greater things to come.

Speaking to some residents on Sunday, the Department of Public Information (DPI) was told of the great work being executed under the Coalition Government.

Hananiah Ward said the transformation has been more than stellar.

“Most notably, I am impressed by the roadwork, they have been ongoing since. The Esplanade Park has improved a lot, families can come and feel welcome. Even garbage collection has improved. The Town Council has been working tediously overtime,” he said.

Asked about criminal activities in the township, the young man said it is clear that crime is not as prevalent as before. He said, what might be leading are petty infractions, which is also under control.

“The police have been working, they have been doing their jobs and families can feel safe,” he assured.

Then there was Patrick Thom, who has been living in the town for some 23 years. He said the last three years has been most transformational.

“For the past three years, I have seen a lot of developments take place in New Amsterdam, Canje and even the East Bank. Right now, the road is like 90 per cent completed. My friends and customers give me some positive feedback, so we are happy and doing well,” he said.

A resident identified only as Jeffery said, “There has been a lot of improvements on roads. Streets we were not able to use, especially in Stanleytown like ‘50’, which was a “track and a dam” for the longest while. It is now a street. A lot of improvement is going on and there is more to come.”

Added to that, the administration is being praised for the installation of street lights from New Amsterdam to Everton on the East Bank, investing in Drainage and Irrigation (D&I), the rehabilitation of schools on the East Bank of Berbice, and providing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and free transportation for school children free of cost.
