New High Commissioner of Botswana accredited

Georgetown, GINA, February 20, 2014

 

Her Excellency, Bernadette Sebage Rathedi, appointed as the High Commissioner of Botswana to Guyana was accredited today, by President Donald Ramotar.

The President said that the two nations which have a long relationship, that has been mutually beneficial with regards to the development of human capital in particular. He acknowledged the contributions of Guyana, by way of teachers and engineers to Botswana’s human capital.

He said that Guyana’s relationship with Botswana has been based on shared interests and a determination to work together for the sustainable development of the countries, based on the principles of the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement and the Commonwealth of Nations.

It was noted that as small developing countries, Guyana and Botswana are faced with many challenges to achieve sustained economic growth, whilst reducing poverty. The new High commissioner pledged to work with Botswana and other countries in similar geographic and economic circumstances to assist in their development.

“I am very proud of the fact that Guyana has been the contributor in the form of the human capital that we sent to help develop Botswana’s human capital and in a way, we are repaying the African continent for the development of our own country.”

He wished the High Commissioner a productive and successful tour of duty of Guyana, and expressed Government’s and the people of Guyana’s best wishes to President Ian Khama and to the progress and prosperity of the Botswana people.

High Commissioner Rathedi expressed best wishes from her country’s president and people, whilst recalling that both nations gained independence the same year.

“I must say that a number of Botswana executives passed through the hands of Guyanese teachers. We also had a number of engineers and a number of other good people from your human resource development sector. For this, I wish to express Botswana’s profound appreciation to the government and the people of Guyana for their invaluable support”.

It was noted that the two countries’ relationship continues to grow through joint association with the African, Caribbean, Pacific Group of Countries and the International Criminal Court, the latter in which Botswana is hopeful of Guyana’s support as it seeks to contest a seat, later in 2014.

Ms Rathedi, who will be stationed in Brazil, also expressed her country’s commitment to grow the bilateral relations between the two states.
