New software for education management

Secondary school teachers from Regions Three (Essequibo Island/ West Demerara), Four (Demerara/Mahaica) and Georgetown commenced training in the use an Education Management Information System (EMIS) software intended to improve information management and efficiency in schools.

The EMIS will enable teachers, and the Ministry of Education (MOE) policymakers to efficiently manage the education sector data and take effective measures to address key sector issues.

Addressing the opening of the workshop on Wednesday, Minister of Education Nicolette Henry said once there is valid data and information, changes can be made and support is given to implement policies that will transform the education systems. That transformation, she said can, in turn, create high-quality institutes of learning that will regain Guyana’s international reputation of producing accomplished, top-rated students.

The landmark training programme for teachers from twenty schools is intended to impact the human resource of the ministry and by extension the country.

Head of the Management Information Systems Unit (MIS), of the ministry, Indar Singh explained software features include enrolment information, attendance, grade book, report card, transcripts, end of year processing, class portal, teacher web pages, parent portal, teacher information, time-tabling, and reporting.

“This will be a major resource to gather the information we need to monitor, assess and inform educational policies moving forward,” Singh said.

Meanwhile, Minister Henry, earlier today commenced “Fit for Purpose” visits to various departments of her ministry. She was apprised of the many exhibitions and training opportunities as well as curriculum development towards reform.

In the field of dance, through the Unit of Allied Arts, there are on-going workshops for teachers in several regions. Additionally, some teachers and students have completed the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and their performance continue to improve based on the results being achieved.

“We have to take a strategic approach to impact our children positively…we want more of our students to get into IV League Universities and your unit is integral to His Excellency’s Vision for all Guyanese,” Minister Henry encouraged.

Further, the Allied Arts employees were reminded: “You come to work to be an agent of social change here in Guyana and ultimately the global village and this much I expect from you as part of the team as an obligation.”

The team was advised of their importance to the groups responsible for national education development and as such, there is no room for working in silos. “The world is changing and so should we… Let’s think of modern ways of getting our children interested in education and self-development,” Minister Henry noted.
