NRDCC continues in 2018 to improve local govt administration

DPI, GUYANA, Tuesday, November 28, 2017

In 2018, the central government will continue its efforts to improve local government administrations by hosting the second National Regional Development Consultative Committee (NRDCC).

FLASHBACK: President David Granger, Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan and other government ministers pose with regional administrators at the inaugural NRDCC.

NRDCC was launched at the start of 2017 to build strong regional administrations and deepen their abilities to address obstacles to the regions’ development including crime, disease, ignorance, and poverty.

The NRDCC of 2017 served as a forum for collaboration and cooperation across the different levels of local government and across the regions. It facilitated information sharing, support and strategic planning between the various authorities.

Budget 2018 makes provision for the development of a Regional Development Report during the second round of consultations.  This report, which is to be laid in Parliament, will provide an account of the operations and development trajectory of the local authorities.

The NRDCC meeting of 2018 will also be held in January. While the local government system was resuscitated following Local Government Elections (LGE) in March 2016, the system is facing a number of challenges.

In his address at the inaugural NRDCC meeting, President David Granger noted, “these challenges can be overcome through greater consultation, through collaboration, through communication, through cooperation and coordination between the local government organs across this great country.”
