The New Amsterdam Town Hall was filled with excitement as the curtains came down on the inaugural Commander’s Cup inter-division debating competition on April 27. Number Two Sub-division (Borlam to Moleson Creek) triumphed over Number Three Sub-division (West Coast Berbice).

Commander of B Division Lyndon Alves hands over the coveted trophy to the winning team – Number Two sub-division.

The competition was the brainchild of the ‘B’ Division, Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Lyndon Alves and was designed to select the best debaters for the annual national police debating competition which will be hosted later this year.

Debating the moot on the topic ‘Corruption is more of a perception than a reality in the GPF’ Corporal Royden Sealey and the team from East Berbice proved too much for the opposition their West Berbice counterparts. The Number Two Sub-division team scored 581 to cop the first prize trophy, $200,000 in cash, the best speaker prize and bragging rights for a year.

Second place winners Number Three sub-division with 496 points did not leave empty-handed; also taking away a trophy in addition to $150,000 in cash prize.

Commander Alves explained that competition was established to provide ranks that are often overlooked with an opportunity to compete. “In the past many times we have fielded a team to participate in the competition simply because they participated the previous year but this year we have had the opportunity to see many talented junior ranks stake a claim. This not only allows us to choose the best within the division but also allows their superiors to recognise their abilities and help push them in the right direction for the benefit of the force,” Alves said.

The coach and mentor Abu Hurriah will now select the best debaters and prepare them for the national competition. Hurriah posited that given hard work, determination and commitment ‘B’ Division will be a force to be reckoned with at the nationals.

Royden Sealey who was adjudged best speaker collects his trophy.

Officer in Charge of Number Three sub-division (West Coast Berbice) Elton Davidson hands over the prize to second place winners, Number Three Sub-division.
