One Mile Extension CDC promotes kitchen gardens

Vegetable or “Greens” are synonymous with the Guyanese diet and the cultivation of kitchen gardens is not an uncommon sight in many communities across the country.

To encourage the cultivation of even more kitchen gardens, the Community Development Council (CDC) of One Mile Extension Wismar Linden, distributed free plants during the recent Linden Exposition and Trade Fair 2018.

Coordinator of the project, Wanda Richmond explained that the distribution of the seedlings is an on-going exercise, and the group is actively working with 30 groups in this regard.  “There are over 30 persons from the community registered with NAREI who normally run checks in the community on the kitchen gardens and meet with the farmers.”

The group has been distributing seedling to secondary schools in the region. “We have distributed free seedlings to the secondary schools because they have their little gardens at school, so we are helping them.”

Those seedlings not freely distributed are sold at “Market Day,” another initiative of the CDC.

“Right now, we have been going out every other Friday to the community to also sell our seedlings. This whole kitchen garden idea is catching on because more and more people are coming on board the business. They are excited about the fruit they are seeing. The fruits of their labour so to speak.”

The group held their first ‘Market Day’ last year and plan to continue this venture.

Following the destruction of the NAREI building by fire in 2012, the CDC has been assisting with the delivery of agricultural services to Linden and Region 10 since 2015. They are also working along with the Food for The Poor and other personnel from other support agencies.
