Over 100 participate in ‘Zero Fatalities in the Workplace’ seminar

Over 100 employers and workers from public and private participated in a ‘Zero Fatalities in the Workplace’ seminar today. The one-day activity is among several events being held in observance of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Month.

The month’s activities focus on expanding the knowledge base and sensitising young workers about their rights and obligations within the context of OSH, both at the enterprise and national level.
The seminar hosted at the Herdmanston Lodge, Queenstown Georgetown is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Social Protection’s OSH Department and the Guyana Goldfields-Aurora Gold Mines.
During brief remarks, General Manager of Guyana Goldfields, Tom Henderson, noted that the mining company is cognisant of the issues being highlighted during this month’s OSH Awareness observance. He also committed to campaigning diligently on the issues regarding the health, safety and well-being of workers.
Henderson added that, at the end of the month, the company will be organising a number of activities including a health fair and will provide and health and safety awareness courses and curriculum for its workers. “We take the safety of our workers seriously.”
Internationally acclaimed safety and health specialist, Chad Hymas, who was the facilitator at today’s event shared unique life stories and philosophies with the participants in keeping with Occupational Safety and Health.
Hymas explained that self-inspiration in important, “In other words I can come here and talk about being better workers, colleagues and employers, but they have to motivate themselves. So Occupational Safety and Health ties in with that.”
