Over 100 Region Five residents to receive skills training

More than 145 persons from Region Five are to benefit from training spearheaded by the Board of Industrial Training.

CEO of BIT, Mr. Richard Maughn, made the remarks during a visit to Fort Wellington on Friday.

“Some of the training presently ongoing are heavy equipment operations and maintenance, cosmetology, commercial food preparation, garment construction and introduction to agro-processing technologies,” he said.

The programme is designed to not only teach participants a trade, but also equip them with the necessary tools to earn and save money.

“We have mapped out the region and programmes are conducted at several locations; for the cosmetology programme, persons will attend the Nandra Unisex Salon and Institute of Cosmetology and the Sharon’s Beauty Exchange and School of Cosmetology. Other programmes will be held at Sandra’s Skills Training Center and the Young Women’s Christian Association, all located in the region,” Mr. Maughn said.

The CEO said the BIT ensured systems were in place to properly engage people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and desirous of learning a skill.

He added people were informed through the Neighborhood Democratic Councils and given the opportunity to register for the programmes.

Mr. Maughn also interacted with staff at the Regional and Neighborhood Democratic Councils where he shared plans for future training programmes targeting young women, single parents and school dropouts.
