GUYANA, GINA, Thursday, May 11, 2017

Several projects are slated to be undertaken in Region Two, Pomeroon-Supenaam to the tune of over $100M. Over 50 contracts were awarded recently, Regional Executive Officer (REO), Region Two, Rupert Hopkinson said.

Hopkinson explained that the funds were provided in the region’s 2017 budget, but will be put into realisation to upgrade several projects in the region. “One of the best things that we will be doing is the rehabilitation and general repairs to the Suddie and Charity hospitals which will cost more than $20M. We’ll also continue building bridges and rehabilitating and constructing roads in several areas,” Hopkinson explained.

Other developments scheduled for the region include construction of a number of sanitary blocks at different schools, rehabilitation of the Cheddi Jagan play park which had been in poor condition for a number of years, and repairs to teachers’ quarters, particularly in the Pomeroon.

The REO pointed out that the region will also work towards better farm-to-market roads and improved drainage and irrigation, “to ensure that when there’s heavy rainfall, the water can come off the land quickly and not damage residents’ livestock (and) mainly rice activities.”

Hopkinson stated that amidst the negative comments from persons, mainly members of the opposition, there is progress in the region. He said during last year, the region saved approximately $147M which was used to invest in several projects.

“We can point to you the new projects that have been executed as a result of the spending of that $147M. If you move around the region, you will see kokers rehabilitated, canals desilted, teachers’ quarters built, and health centre rehabilitated. The Aurora Primary School was rehabilitated at a cost of $114M and road works were completed in Good Hope and other areas along the coast,” the REO outlined.

The REO further highlighted that works were even undertaken in the long neglected Dartmouth community. Hopkinson noted that this community, for the first time received a bridge that is saving children from walking long distances to schools, a bus shed and street lights. “We’re seeing and feeling the development all over the region, contrary to what the opposition is saying. As REO, I feel proud and excited to fashion a region that will bring joy and happiness to the people.”

Other developments which were undertaken in the region include rehabilitation of the region’s State House, the commencement of the beautification process which saw several play parks being rehabilitated and landscaped, in addition to rehabilitation works at both Suddie and Charity Hospitals.

The REO is confident that Region Two is on the brink of developmental take off. He said the government has started a good work in the region and is continuing to do so; amidst the negatives touted about the region.
