Over $1M in sport equipment donated to special needs school

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, September 13, 2018

Students with disabilities are now better equipped to participate in the two-day sporting event from October 18 – 19, due to the timely donation of over $1Million worth in sporting equipment by the NSC.

Organised by the National Sports Commission (NSC), the event which is in its third year, will be hosted at the National Gymnasium and the Guyana Defence Force ground.

The equipment was handed over to the David Rose Special School, St. Barnabas, Society for the Blind, Ministry of Education Unit for the Blind and the Harold B. Davis Special School by the Director of Sport Christopher Jones. Among the items received were dominos, braille numbers and cars and bocce sets.

Sport Director Jones reaffirmed his promise to boost all sporting events, stating that “the National Sports Commission is committed to sports for all and ensuring that all of our athletes regardless of their physical wellbeing have an equal opportunity to participate in sport.”

Joan Jackilin-Butcher, a Senior Teacher of the Harold B. Davis Special School expressed her gratitude for the sporting equipment. “…we promise that we will make every effort to utilise what is being given to us and we will assure you that our children will benefit because in every disability there is an ability.”

The representatives from the other schools also echoed similar sentiments and are all looking forward to the two-day sporting event next month.
