Parliament of Guyana appointed to Board of Directors at 17th Plenary Assembly of ParlAmericas

Hon. Manzoor Nadir, MP, Speaker of the National Assembly, on Friday, 27th November, 2020, represented the Parliament of Guyana in the 17th Plenary Assembly of ParlAmericas, co-hosted by the Legislative Assembly of Costa Rica.

Hon. Speaker Nadir will serve on the Board of Directors as a representative of the Sub-region of South America. It is the first time that the Parliament of Guyana will serve on the governing board of an international parliamentary body. Other Board Members are representatives from Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Canada, Mexico, Suriname, Colombia, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Jamaica and Chile.

The Assembly, held virtually, brought together over 100 participants from the 35 Member States of ParlAmericas to discuss the theme: Towards a Circular Economy. A circular economy, in this context, pertains to policies and legislation that promote and foster a green economy, with some emphasis on COVID-19.

The forum provided representatives of Member States the opportunity to share five-minute presentations on circular economy best practices and legislation in their countries. The presentations emphasised the importance of cooperation among all actors (including both public and private sectors) in the promotion of a green economy, focusing on reduction of the use of plastics, solar, wind and hydro energy, and recycling.

Hon. Speaker Nadir, during his presentation, shared that the Low Carbon Development Strategy as well as the Green State Development Strategy can be deemed appropriate models in the promotion of a circular economy.

The agenda of the Assembly also included reading of the Declaration on a circular economy and adoption of nominations for new ParlAmericas Board of Directors for the 2020 – 2022 term.

ParlAmericas comprises national Parliaments from North, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean. Its working session for the 17th ParlAmericas Assembly was held on 16th November, 2020.
