Participants laud e-Agriculture Forum

The Caribbean Telecommunications Union’s e-Agriculture forum continued today with participants being informed of the importance of ICT integration into the agriculture sector.
Today’s discussion was attended by students of the Guyana School of Agriculture, farmers, fishermen and other stakeholders within the industry. The agenda focused on the networking aspect of e-Agriculture which would allow for persons within the industry to communicate and find solutions to common issues as they arise.
The Department of Public Information (DPI) spoke to some of the participants to get their views on the initiative.
Carl Persaud, a beekeeper by profession lauded the programme stating that “e-agriculture can positively impact the industry as farmers can network and share vitally needed information.” Persaud expressed hope that with the use of ICT, persons engaged in beekeeping in remote parts of the country would be able to access new information which would be able to aid them in improving their productions.
Jared John, a student of the Guyana School of Agriculture noted that the introduction of technology in the Agriculture sector is an important step. He highlighted that “marketing is very important when it comes to Agriculture,” adding that the initiative was “very informative”.
At the opening of the CTU-ICT Roadshow yesterday, Sub Regional Coordinator of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisations (UN-FAO), Dr. Lystra Flecher-Paul stated that e-agriculture is important as it provides opportunities for youth employment, development for rural areas, improves the livelihood of citizens and generates income.
