Plegtanker health centre up and functioning

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, December 6, 2018

The small rural village of Plegtanker located on the East Bank Berbice is now equipped with a functioning health centre. The facility has been up and running, delivering health services to residents for approximately two weeks.

The facility constructed in 2017, was handed over to the Regional Health Services on November 20, 2018, after the completion of much needed additional work.

The community of approximately 30 families will now benefit from all the regular services provided at other health centres across the country. These include blood pressure testing, blood sugar testing, HIV/AIDS testing, consultation and medical examination.

The staff component comprises a doctor, one nurse assistant, one registered nurse, one Midwife, one community health worker and one clinic attendant.

According to the Senior Health Visitor, (acting), to the region Carline Phillips, following a survey conducted some years ago, it was determined that a healthcare facility was needed in the area. Before the establishment of the Plegtanker health centre, residents of the community and surrounding communities travelled five miles to seek medical attention at the health facility in Brother’s Village.

Several residents in the village expressed their satisfaction with the Ministry of Public health’s move to build the new facility in their community

According to Mrs. Roopnarine, a mother of two small children ages four and six, “they are at the growing stage where it is easy for them to get sick. And before I would have to wait until my husband come out early from his work in the dam to take them to seek medical attention. So, with this health centre right in my area I can now walk and take my children to get treatment.”

Region Six’s Director of Regional Health Services, Jevaughn Andrew Stephen noted that it is his administration’s mandate to deliver proper health care services throughout the region and he will continue to work towards this goal.
