“The outcome has to be accepted and we want our supporters, in particular, to understand that we are going back to the polls,” were the sentiments shared by Leader of Government Business in the National Assembly and Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo on Friday.

The Prime Minister was speaking at a press conference following the passage of the Opposition-led no-confidence motion against the APNU+AFC Government.

In a shocking move, Government Member of Parliament (MP) Charrandas Persaud voted ‘yes’ allowing the opposition to secure 33 votes in favour of the motion.

With this new development, General Elections are constitutionally due within 90 days. Prime Minister Nagamootoo said until that time, the Government remains in office.

He said government and its advisers will meet to explore and discuss available options and their timelines. A call was made for Guyanese to respect the outcome of the motion, and to conduct their business as usual.

Prime Minister Nagamootoo noted that Persaud did not show or express any disgruntlement regarding the voting against the motion when the government Members of Parliament (MPs) met prior to the sitting.

Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence said it was a clear act of betrayal on Persaud’s part. Nevertheless, Government remains adamant at another victory at the polls.

He did, however, acknowledge that much has to be done before the Coalition heads to the polls come 2019.

The no-confidence motion was filed by Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo in November.
