PM receives visit from Miss World Guyana 2017

DPI, GUYANA, Wednesday, August 23, 2017

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo received a special visit today, from Miss World Guyana 2017, Vena Mookram and offered to support her beauty with a purpose platform.

The Prime Minister said he admired the recently crowned Miss World Guyana’s platform – ‘Promoting Physical Fitness and Nutrition in Relation to the Prevention of Diabetes’. He urged her to encourage others to change their lifestyles in terms of their eating habits.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo gifted Miss World Guyana Vena Mookram special tokens.

“In Guyana, a lot of people do not treat it (diabetes) like a regular disease. They (citizens) have a tendency to hide diabetes as if it is a bad word and people feel like they should not tell others, I think it is part of the sensitisation that you will need to do that there is nothing wrong testing to know whether…you are diabetic or pre-diabetic,” Prime Minister Nagamootoo explained.

The Prime Minister reiterated that persons diagnosed with diabetes should not be ashamed of their health status, noting that it can be treated and controlled.

It was highlighted that diabetes is one of the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD)’s caused by three risk factors -unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and abuse of alcohol. A programme, primarily through education, is under consideration by the Ministry of Public Health to reduce these risks.

Mookram expressed her gratitude towards the Prime Minister for his support. She promised to continue to host events, such as a health/fitness fair in Essequibo, among other activities to increase public awareness of her platform to benefit her community and the country as a whole.

Miss World explained that she decided to focus on promoting physical fitness and nutrition in relation to the prevention of diabetes, as her platform since a family member, diagnosed with diabetes lost their battle against the disease.

Mookram’s platform focuses on developing a healthy diet and physical lifestyle towards the creation of a (health) cookbook with the aim of reducing the number of persons with chronic diseases in Guyana.
