Police investigating GPL email issue – Minister Harmon
Georgetown, GINA, July 14, 2016
The Guyana Police Force has been asked to investigate issues arising out of the recent discovery of emails which contained allegations of concocted information used previously to aid in the removal of Colin Welch, acting CEO, of the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL).
Minister of State, Joseph Harmon told reporters at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing today, that Minister of Public Infrastructure David Patterson, who has responsibility for GPL indicated that, “some preliminary investigations had been done and the matter has been handed over to the police to investigate the authenticity of the emails and any concomitant issues which may arise.”
The Minister explained that information received suggest that while the email address appears to be false the matters contained therein, “…included matters for which, as a government we have to have some concern.”
Recently media reports surfaced about a leaked email between former senior managers and current staff of GPL which prompted this investigation.
Welch’s contract was terminated on February 22, 2016 after there were complaints alleging that he was in communication with the bidder and supplier of pre-paid meters, encouraging one set of bidders to supply false information.
