Positive COVID-19 cases now stand at 156

The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Guyana now stands at 156 as the Ministry of Public Health has recorded two new cases.

In the Ministry’s daily COVID update Director of Primary Health Care, Dr. Ertenisa Hamilton reported that there 38 tests conducted within the last 24 hours

Of the 156 cases, the country has recorded 12 deaths; the number of recoveries has increased to 86 following reports that two more persons have recuperated from COVID-19 related illnesses.

To date, the total number of persons tested for the COVID-19 is 1,854 with 1,698 of those yielding negative results

There are now 58 active cases are in isolation at various facilities across Guyana; one patient remains in the COVID-19 ICU at the GPHC and 14 persons in institutional quarantine

During the ministry’s COVID-19 update, the Director of Primary Health Care, Dr. Ertenisa Hamilton cautioned citizens not become complacent, and to be aware of the factors that can lead to a decline in the number of reported cases

“Physical distancing, Cough and sneeze etiquette, handwashing and most importantly staying at home. Let’s prioritize them so that Guyana too can begin to see no new cases.,” Dr. Hamilton underscored

As of June 9, 2020, the WHO has reported that globally the confirmed cases stand at 7,039,918 with 404,396 deaths. While in the Regions of the Americas, positive cases have reached 3,366,251 with a total of 183,950 deaths.
