DPI, Guyana, Thursday, August 22, 2019

His Excellency, President David Granger declared open the Foundation for Real Christian Education’s (FORCE) – GRECO Training Centre in Victoria, East Coast Demerara on Thursday afternoon.

Delivering the feature address, he reminded that the church played an important role in the dissemination of education. In the past, he explained, in most villages across Guyana, churches and schools would often be built close to each other.

“The village was the common ground on which church and school come together, the churches established schools which were very convenient for the villagers who wished to have their children educated near to their homes so the public education system evolved from this model,” the Head of State explained.

The president noted that educational opportunities should be provided to all as it “unlocks opportunities for employment and empowerment and enterprise, it promotes greater equality, it lifts people out of poverty, it inculcates values and teaches the skills necessary for economic development.”

President Granger emphasised the need to focus on vocational education

He expressed hope that FORCE will be committed “to ensuring that persons who are not in the education system are given opportunities for employment training and an education.”

The Head of State also promised to equip the building with solar panels to help with the electrification of the facility. During the ceremony, the president was presented with a commemorative stamp by Victoria’s oldest resident, Evelyn Bacchus.

FORCE established the centre to teach necessary life skills while at the same time sharing the Christian faith and rescuing youths who have dropped out of the school system.
